Often in the form of large-scale paper drawings in ink or watercolor, but also in smaller formats or even as a diary, bricks and their related structures are omnipresent in Hannah Gernhäuser’s work.
In my artistic work, I have been dealing with rectangular structures for years, which I refer to as “bricks”. Originally, my interest lay in buildings and, consequently, walls made of bricks. However, over time, through and with the bricks, I have developed a language that is uniquely my own, in which I can artistically express emotional processes and states. Thus, a wall structured by bricks serves as a means for me to process my own experiences and give expression to my inner development. Since this development does not proceed in predictable steps but rather as a process, neither the individual rows of bricks nor the bricks themselves are uniform or straight in my works.
Furthermore, I perceive the infinite possibilities for variation in structure and rhythm as an inexhaustible and exciting field of exploration. The calm structure of the grid also allows for the integration of varied graphic compositions. The result is a harmonious interplay of visual elements within the drawing. Furthermore, every stone I draw is unique and symbolizes a nuance or facet of a feeling or sensation.
Since 2019, I have been keeping my so-called “Brick Diaries”, the first one I published as “Gernhäuser's Brickdiary“.
I create my drawings primarily with black ink. In a second step, I add watercolor if it feels right. While drawing, I find myself in a continuous process between intuition and reflection, in which I make decisions about the composition and structure of the image.
